Some rambling thoughts on learning Latin

As I read the posts from other Textkit newbies I've been thinking about how I learned Latin and what suggestions I could make for a beginner in the language. Here are a few thoughts on the matter, in no particular order :

1. Festina lente! My t'ai chi teachers used to tell me that "Ten years is a good beginning", so take your time, savor the language even at its simplest. Start with brief passages, ...

Salvete, amici et amicae.

Salvete, amici et amicae. My name is Jonathan (age 16) and I am currently learning Latin from Wheelock's 6th Ed., it is quite an interesting language and I am happy to find that other people in the world are taking time to learn it. I am seeking to learn Latin as well as I can, and I am already thankful for your assistance and meticulous directions when I have encountered a "gray area". Citius, altius, ...

Ides of March 2005 - Enter Now!

hi everyone,

This contest script is running live, but still very beta.

It's the 'Ides of March' contest that will run all year. The purpose of this contest is for it to be both fun and a way to generate interest and support in Textkit. It's my hope that we can find a mountain of books to give away from Textkit visitors and publishers. I'm searching for a title sponsor now...

So go ahead and ...

Hello

Hi, my name is Tim and I live in the UK, some 45 miles west of London.

I am really glad to have found this site. I've recently become inspired to finally get to grips with Latin and have set out to learn independently. It's great to share these things with like minded people.

I was lucky enough to be taught Latin between the ages of 10/11 and 16, but was unfortunately too ignorant to ...

Latin limericks ?

Since someone thought a good jokes thread was appropriate here, I'll extend the thread a bit and ask if anyone knows any good limericks or other funny poems in Latin. I'm familiar with Grant Legman's books on limericks in which he includes such prosodic wonders as "Nantucketensis ridebat..." and a few others. Thomas Campion wrote an interesting Latin ode to his penis in which he lamented his lack of "exercise" of it when he was ...

Latin is such a beautiful language and i first got into it through an english essay. It was a creative writting piece and i set it in Old England and many of the characters had to speak latin so i chose to learn it and since then i've continued to try and teach myself.

I'm into ...

It's noobie introduction time!

I live in Auckland, New Zealand, and am a full-time student this year, and very happy that I was given the address for textkit.

I spend my spare time roleplaying, dodging swords, using public transport and window shopping. 8)

Anybody Have Any Good Jokes?

My joke vocabulary lacks quality. Does anyone have a good one? Post em here!

Here's two to start

A big earthquake with the strength of 8.1 on the Richter scale has hit
Mexico.

Two million Mexicans have died and over a million are injured. The
country is totally ruined and the government doesn't know where to start

The rest of the world is in shock.

Canada is sending troopers to ...
