New Latin Grammar

by Allen & Greenough

This Latin grammar is made available for free and full download. Allen and Greenough’s New Latin Grammar for Schools and Colleges is the most widely used Latin reference grammar in America. First appearing in 1888, the grammar underwent a significant revision in 1903. This grammar can be purchased new to this day.

It is worth pointing out that this book’s success must be shared with its editors, G. L. Kitteredge, A.A. Howard and Benjamin L. D’Ooge, and the book’s contributors E.S. Sheldon, E.P. Morris and Mr. M. Grant Daniell. These educators were all leading Latin educators of their time and collectively they authored and edited dozens of successful Latin textbooks and educational works.

It must be made absolutely clear that this is a reference grammar and this book is not intended for beginning Latin learners. As the name makes clear, reference grammars were referred to and typically in classroom use they were used in conjunction with a Latin reader that made notes and references back to the reference grammar. Historically, this book was intended for advanced high school students and college level Latin students.

At 489 pages, New Latin Grammar is exhaustive and authoritative. The book is divided into two parts; Part I – Words and Forms and Part II – Syntax. There is also a lengthy treatment of Prosody.
